So I’ve been working on taking parts off of my old Raleigh road bike, and putting them on my even older Trek 820. It’s mostly been going pretty well. Turns out the 3x8 road shifters I have are compatible with the 3x7 drivetrain my Trek has. Unfortunately, the long pull v-brakes had to be replaced with cantilevers, but that wasn’t too expensive. The real kick in the teeth was last night however. After I got done cabling up everything to the shifters, it turns out that my left hand shifter is completely toast. It’ll pull the break breaks fine, but won’t budge the shifter. The levers move fine, but the cable doesn’t move. So yay, the project I thought I was done spending money on just cost me a bit more. Not too much, there’s no high end parts in play here, so I just found an off brand set of 3x7 shifters that have some good reviews. Here’s hoping…
